Newbie Hints
Without going into too much detail on how to play your Priest, here are a few hints for people that have never played one before:
Healing/Resurrection Agro
The main reason why a Priest gets agro. Every heal or resurrect you cast generates agro on all hostile mobs in the room. This means that you have to make sure that your tank gets agro on all of them before you can cast these spells. Defenders get Phalanx, which gives them agro each time they block with their shield, so they passively gain agro. Paladins can use Raging Fist of Aran or heals in combination with Witness to the Word to generate room agro. Experience will teach you when it is safe to heal/resurrect and when not. Bear in mind that some classes generate agro a lot faster than others.
Note that Blessing of Divinity and Bind Wounds do not generate agro, and are safe to use on stacks.
Debuff Agro
Not only heals and resurrection generate agro. Debuffs (Condemn and Visage of Aran) generate a lot of agro too. This means that you should not debuff mobs on entry, but always wait a few moments before you do so.
Buff Efficiently
When you have a designated tank, typically a Defender, Paladin, bear Druid or Warrior, there is no need to fully buff everyone in your group. Buff the tank with all buffs and buff melee with offensive buffs only. On some tier 1 bosses and all tier 2 and 3 bosses, you will have to use Purity of Soul on the whole group.
If there are group members of lower level than the tank, buff the lowest level with defensive buffs as well. Walk-ins or spawns will go after the lowest level player in the room.
For mana and time efficiency, it is very much worth it getting the group buff scrolls. Buy the level 1 versions in the Sucaran shop, and get the level 2 versions from tier 2 and 3 bosses. Group buff scrolls are available for Power of Aran (as Supremacy of Aran), Blessing of Aran (as Prayer of Protection) and Purity of Soul (as Eternity of Soul).
Use Macros
You have 5 skill/spell maces to use while casting various spells. Swapping them manually is too time-consuming and error-prone, and will probably kill your tank. Not swapping is highly inefficient; you have the maces for a reason. The solution is simple: use Macros for your spells and skills.
Understand your Group
While you don't have to know each person in-depth, you will have to have some idea of what each class does, and to some extent, how each player behaves, specifically on boss runs. So bear in mind:
- Room damage hurts low-hp classes most. Usually, a Druid will take care of this with rain, but keep an eye out for low-health support, such as a UF Necromancer, non-bear Druids or Enchanters. It is your task to keep them alive.
- Paladins can get Resurrection. This spell costs a percentage of your mana pool. Because Priests have a large amount of mana, and Paladins typically don't, it is much more efficient to let the Paladin do the resurrecting.
- Keep an eye out for likely agro-stealing suspects. You can give them defensive buffs, or choose to heal them if they steal, or even let them die and resurrect them if they do.
- Some melee do not require Power of Aran. Most Paladins and some Redeemers have spells that overrides it. Don't waste time and mana on buffing those players.

Read the guide about Priesting Boss Runs. Also, read the description for each of the Bosses. Knowing what you're up against may help you do your job better.
